First phase of Bishan-to-City links project opens

The first phase of the Bishan-to-City Links project, which aims to create a seamless pedestrian and cycling route from Bishan to the city along the Kallang River, opened on October 5, 2023. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced that this phase included enhancements and additions such as underpasses and signalized crossings to improve connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Under this phase, the existing underpass at the Central Expressway was enhanced with increased headroom, wider pathways, terrazzo and timber seats, new lighting for safety, and themed flooring that pays homage to the Kallang River’s aquatic life. Additionally, new underpasses and signalized crossings were introduced at Kallang Bahru and Upper Boon Keng, adorned with 3D wall murals, LED lighting, and copper wall inlays of local wildlife.

The project also involved widening paths along roads to facilitate pedestrian and cyclist traffic and better accessibility, such as along Bendemeer Road. Ongoing construction work was set to be completed by the second quarter of 2024, allowing seamless walking, jogging, and cycling from Serangoon Road to Bendemeer Road.

To further improve accessibility, ramps and enhanced underpasses were added at Sims Avenue and Geylang Road. This enables easier access to the Kallang Park Connector, reducing the distance needed to cross the road.

In addition to this, the URA announced a tender for the construction of an elevated pedestrian and cycling bridge at the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). This bridge, spanning 682 meters, will be Singapore’s longest and part of a new link to connect the Kallang Park Connector on the north and south of the PIE, providing a convenient route for pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists. Phase 2 of the Bishan-to-City Links project is set to commence soon, bringing further enhancements to the area.
